Machining Operations

By definition, machining operations are the ones that take the excess of material of the starting working part, so that the resulting form has the wanted geometry.

What are the Machining Operations?

Precision machining use dimensional metrology, which is in charge of studying the measuring techniques that correctly determine linear and angular dimensions (lengths and angles).

Dimensional metrology is also in charge of the inspection of a part indicating geometrical tolerances, as well as linear and angular dimensions. Geometrical tolerancing is the general term applied to the used tolerances category to control form, orientation, location and run-out.

Machining Operations

This process of material removal is called Machining as it’s carried out using a machine tool. The most common operations in the machining industry and performed at ISA are the following:

Turning

Turning is a machining process in which a single point tool removes material from the surface of a working cylindrical part in rotation; the tool moves in a straight line and in a parallel direction to the rotation axis.

Turning is traditionally carried out in a machine tool called lathe, which supplies the power to turn the part at a determined rotation speed with specified advance of the tool and cutting depth. At ISA we have mechanical and CNC lathes.

Maximum bar capacity of 2” diameter and a maximum swing of 23”.

Drilling

Drilling is a machining operation used to create rounded holes in a working part. Drilling is generally performed with a cylindrical rotating tool called drill bit having two cutting edges.

The bit goes into the stationary working part to form a hole which diameter is determined by the drill bit’s diameter. Drilling is carried out in a drill press, even though other machines tool can perform this operation. At ISA we have multiple capacity drill presses for different purposes.



Milling

Milling is a machining operation in which a working part is passed in front of a cylindrical rotating tool with multiple cutting edges. The cutting tool’s axis of rotation is perpendicular to the driving direction.

The distinguishing characteristic of milling and drilling is the orientation between the axis of the tool and the driving direction. The cutting tool in milling is called milling cutter and the cutting edges are called teeth. A milling machine is the machine tool that traditionally executes this process. At ISA we have machanical and CNC milling machines.
